Ultrasound for Baby Gender Determination

Prematurely discovering a baby’s gender has become increasingly common nowadays. Before your baby is born, you will be informed that what you will have been awarded by the Almighty! But the question arises here: how does an ultrasound actually work?

An ultrasound machine (sonogram) sends sound waves through your uterus during a gender scan & the sound waves bounce off your baby and are translated by a computer into an image on a screen which shows your baby’s position and movements.

Mother’s first scan will be between 11 and 13 weeks. The purpose of the scan is to assess your baby’s likelihood of having Down Syndrome rather than to determine gender. During this scan you will be able to see your baby for the first time, and if the baby is lying on its back, in an upright position surrounded by amniotic fluid, with its legs wide open where you may be able to determine the gender.

During a gender scan between 11–13 weeks, the result is usually just an “informed guess” made by the sonographer (the person who performs the scan) because at that age, the penis and the clitoris can look the same. It is not unusual to see the penis hidden behind the bottom during an early gender scan, which gives the impression that the baby is a girl.

Typically, women wait until their second scan, or an anomaly scan, or a baby health check scan before having their gender determined. The scan is usually done between 18 and 21 weeks.

During the ultrasound, you can ask your sonographer to perform a gender scan for you so you know the sex of your baby. It’s best to tell them when the scan begins so that they know where to look.

Your sonographer cannot be 100% sure about the gender of your baby; this is something you need to understand. In some cases, it may be difficult or impossible to tell whether your baby is male or female if your baby is lying in an awkward position.

However, there are many other technologies as well which are under discussion at the moment such as Baby Visions, a studio in Springfield, Illinois where a sonogram specialist is available who can detect 99.99% of the gender of a baby by using ultrasound.
